Best Air Purifier for Smoke and Cigarette 2017

Why Choose the Best Air Purifier for Smoke?

The Harm of  Smoke and Cigarettes

If you are a heavy smoker or have a smoker at home, it’s almost impossible to keep your home clean. Normal air purifiers are not designed to get rid of gaseous pollutants, which are the main components of tobacco smoke. These pollutants, which are smaller than most other particles, can adhere to walls, furniture and other household objects like bedding, carpet or even light bulbs. And because smoking is a continuous process, and smokers are constantly producing new particles, it’s challenging for air purifiers to keep up with these new pollutants. That is the reason why we need to choose the best air purifier for cigarette smoke.

Smoking has a bad influence not only on smokers themselves, but also on those who inhale secondhand smoke. Research shows that people who do not smoke but live with cigar smoke have 20 percent more risk of coronary heart disease than those who are living with non-smokers. Not to mention those people who suffer from allergy or asthma problems, because smoke particles are common causes of asthma attacks or allergic reactions.

The best way to avoid all these outcomes is, of course, to stop smoking entirely. But since that is a long-term process, getting a high-quality smoke air purifier is also an option you deserve. Following are some of the best air purifiers of 2016 – 2017 that are especially suitable for smokers.

smoke air purifier buying guide

There are different types and models of air purifiers on the market. Not all air purifiers are the same because different devices clean air in different ways. For example, some air purifiers do an excellent job removing harmful particles from the air, but they don’t do anything about the smells present in the air. Others do absorb the smells but don’t remove allergens and dust.

If you want to choose an air purifier that will clean the air from smoke, choose a device that has an activated carbon filter. It can have it as the only filter or as one of the filters. This article will explain the reasons behind it. It will also provide you with tips that will help you make a better decision when choosing an air purifier.

What is smoke?

smoke and health

From a chemical standpoint, smoke is a combination of various kinds of particles. The fact that it’s a combination of particles is what makes smoke visible. Smoke is not just gas. It is a combination of gas and visible particles.

This is what makes smoke different from allergens. An allergen is any substance that your immune system treats as a threat. Many of allergens are airborne and invisible. Smoke is visible.  It is also the reason why you need a separate filter for allergens and a separate filter for smoke.

Smoke includes tiny solids, liquids, and molecules of gas. Different kinds of smoke can contain thousands of different chemicals and combinations of chemicals and particles. This being said, most of the visible smoke that you see in your daily life consists of carbon, oils, ashes, and tar.

When does smoke occur?

When does smoke occur?

You can see smoke when for some reason combustion is not complete. This means that the oxygen doesn’t burn the fuel completely for certain reasons and smoke appears. In a complete combustion process everything burns. The only byproducts of complete combustion are water and carbon dioxide. When combustion is incomplete, there are particles that remain unburned and smoke is a collection of such particles. Each particle on its own is too small for your eyes to see, but together these particles form visible smoke.

Is smoke dangerous?

Is smoke dangerous?

Smoke can be very dangerous. About three-fourths of victims in home fires die because of smoke inhalation and not because of fire. Depending on the burning particles, smoke can be extremely toxic. This may lead to severe irritation of your lungs. The toxicity is one of the reasons why so many smokers eventually get lung cancer. For example, in the United States, smoking is the cause of about 500,000 deaths. According to research, smoke can also increase the risks of coronary heart disease, heart stroke, respiratory disease and other health conditions. (Source: https://www.cdc.gov/tobacco/data_statistics/fact_sheets/health_effects/effects_cig_smoking/index.htm )

About 650,000 people die from heart disease in North America annually. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States and second leading cause in Canada. About the same number of people, 650,000, die annually from cancer. About 150,000 people die from chronic lower respiratory diseases.

What you need to know about secondhand smoking

 secondhand smoking and air quality

Even secondhand smoking can be very dangerous. Secondhand smoking is inhaling side emissions of a burning tobacco product. Such emissions can contain more than 40 chemicals that may lead to the development of cancer. A 1997 California Report on Secondhand smoking calculated that about 50,000 people die annually in the United States from secondhand smoking. In 2007, Chengbo Wang of the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia conducted a study of nonsmokers using magnetic resonance imaging. The study found that it was possible to detect damage to the lungs of nonsmokers from secondhand smoke using magnetic resonance imaging technology. CNN did a report on the study.

These results were one of the reasons in the changes of government secondhand smoking policy. Initially, the requirements had institutions separate smokers and nonsmokers in the same areas. Now in many cities institutions are required to have separately ventilated smoking rooms and completely separate 100% smoke-free environments.

In the last several decades, the scientific research on the issue of second-hand smoking has been getting clearer and clearer. Because of this, now scientists are able not just talk about harms of secondhand smoke in general but also the influence of secondhand smoke in different geographic areas and on people of different ethnicities, types of workers and people of various socioeconomic backgrounds.

For example, one day of exposure to really bad air, such as in Beijing, China, is the same as smoking one or two cigarettes. Studies also show that restaurants and bars in cities with smoke-free laws have air that is 82% less polluted compared to the air in restaurants and bars in cities without smoke-free laws. Secondhand smoking can kill, which is why it is important that you get a quality air purifier even if you don’t smoke yourself.

Dangers of different kinds of smoke

Dangers of different kinds of smoke

One of the most toxic types of smoke that you may incur in your regular life is smoke that contains carbon monoxide. Such smoke is highly toxic. It may even contain hydrogen cyanide and phosgene. These compounds are completely colorless and odorless. This means that you will not be able to notice them with a naked eye or smell them, yet inhaling such a smoke can lead to a carbon monoxide poisoning, incapacitation and loss of consciousness.

Smoke that comes from fires with a lack of oxygen can be flammable and has a potential to ignite.

Compounds such as sulfur oxides and hydrogen chloride, found in some smokes, can cause corrosion in both lungs and humans and materials in the environment.

When you sleep, your nose doesn’t identify smoke in the air. No does your brain, however, since you don’t stop breathing when you sleep, the smoke will get into your lungs without you realizing it. If the lungs become extremely enveloped in smoke, you will wake up (this doesn’t work if you are under the influence of drugs or alcohol). You will stay asleep is the amount of smoke is too small for your brain to experience stimulation. However, smoke will still have a negative impact on your lungs.

You may be living in a smoke-free city and not have any smokers in your household, yet getting an air purifier may still be a very good idea for you because smoke can be a major component of ambient air pollution from plants, car traffic, and other sources. To be fair, the concentration of pollutants in such smoke is typically much less compared to cigarette smoke.

What types of air purifiers are the most effective in removing smoke from the air?

What types of air purifiers are the most effective in removing smoke

If you are looking for an air purifier that will remove smoke from the air, look for devices with activate carbon filters. Active (or activated) carbon is a type of carbon with an extremely porous surface. A gram of activated carbon has a surface area that exceeds 30,000 square feet.

When a gas passes through an activated carbon filter its particles bond with carbon and get trapped. For this reason, activated carbon filters are extremely successful at trapping fumes, cigarette smoke, odors, and gases. One of the disadvantages of activated carbon filters is that they do not remove allergens and microorganisms from the air. If you are looking for an air purifier that removes both smoke and allergens, you need a purifier with an activated carbon filter and a HEPA filter.

HEPA is an abbreviation for High-Efficiency Particulate Air. It is an air filter standard regulated by the United States Department of Energy.

To qualify as a HEPA filter, a filter needs to remove 99.97% of particles that are smaller than 0.3 microns from the air that passes through the filter. In their marketing, many of the companies use combinations of words such as “HEPA-like,” “HEPA-style,” “99% HEPA” to describe the filters in their devices. These words are often meaningless. True HEPA filters meet the requirements from the government and have been tested in independent laboratories.

  1. The Air Purifier treats the air in your home or office by breaking down odor causing pollutants and dropping airborne particulate from your breathing space. The Air Purifier produces ozone and negatively charged ions, the same effective cleansing agents that natures uses to treat outdoor air.

  4. I have recently been diagnosed with COPD. I don’t feel any of the affects yet, no shorftness of breath or anything. I am looking for an air purifier for someone with COPD, can you tell me if Blueair 203 Slim HepaSilent Air-Purification System is safe for me. I understand that I can’t have an ionizer. I am still living with a smoker but this machine would be for my bedroom only, where I spend a great deal of my time. Amazon sells a Blueair 201SF Replacement VOC Smokestop Filter for 200/300 Series Units for $99.00. They also sell the Blueair 200/300 Series Particle Replacement Filter $49.95. 1. Hey John, as you already diagnosed with COPD, we strongly suggest you to turn to your doctor to recommend one air purifier to you. Though the air purifiers here are top rated models on the market, we still believe the advice from the doctors is much better and suitable to you.
