Review and Comparison: Sharp KC-850U and KC-860U
Sharp KC-850U Plasmacluster Air Purifier and Sharp KC-860U are two types of humidifier-purifier produced by the Sharp company.
As two products in the same line, they are quite similar to each other. Basically, they share the same features, but since the latter is more expensive (almost $100) than the former model, you will also expect some differences between them.
I will compare the two models, so if you want to choose one, but are not sure which is more suitable, you can have a look at the similarities and differences and decide which is best for you.

Similarities between KC-860u and KC-850u
The first thing you should notice is that they are both humidifier-purifiers. That means they both have water tanks and are able to pump water into your room. Dry air is the perfect home for many viruses that cause flu and cold symptoms, and a recommended home humidity level lies between 30 and 50 percent. Having a humidifier will not only decrease the risk of catching a cold, it will also relieve you from the discomfort of waking up with a dried throat/nose.
Three-stage filtration system
Both models uses a three-stage filtration system including a pre-filter, an active carbon filter and a true HEPA filter. Many purifiers have a similar system, but these two models are unique because their pre-filter is not only permanent and washable, it also can be vacuumed – in less than 30 seconds. Further, the carbon filter is washable, but you need to change that every five years.
Sharp Plasmacluster technology
All air purifiers produced by Sharp use the unique patented Plasmacluster technology. By emitting positive and negative ions, it is able to break down and remove allergens and odors, without producing any harmful chemicals like ozone. This is extremely useful against small particles at molecular levels.
As a Comparison,
Differences between KC-860u and KC-860u
The CADR rate for Sharp KC-850U is lower than that for Sharp KC-860U. The exact CADR rate for KC-850U is 164 for dust and smoke, and 174 for pollen. For smaller bedrooms up to 254 square feet, this is adequate. However, if you have a larger room size, you have to consider Sharp KC-860U Plasmacluster air purifier as it boasts a higher rate: 231 for dust, 220 for smoke and 245 for pollen. But even with a higher CADR, KC-860U is not suitable for large living rooms, only small living rooms or large bedrooms up to 341 square feet.
As a more powerful model, Sharp KC-860U enjoys a slightly higher humidification ability. At its highest speed, KC-860U is able to pump 1.5 pints of water per hour into the room, while the amount per hour for KC-850U is 1.3 pints. That makes no real difference; at least, you won’t feel it. Finally, many reviewers report that after a period of time, they are tired of repeated tank refilling, so most of them simply turn it off – if you don’t want the trouble, perhaps you should look at the “dry” purifiers.
Price and energy consumption
One of the most important factors when buying a product is its price. Since both of these models use the same filtration system, they both have filters that last five years, so the maintenance for these two is almost identical. As a more powerful model, Sharp KC-860U costs more than $400, while KC-850U costs a little less than $400.
As a Comparison,
Both models are mid-level powerful “wet air purifiers,” and their basic features are identical. You can choose either of them in accordance with your room size. You can also check some Oreck air purifiers here or Honeywell air purifier consumer reports here.
